International Women’s Day – Top Female Game Characters

International Women’s Day – Top Female Game Characters

There are a lot of female protagonists that have come and gone in video games throughout the years.  Some are forgotten however a lot are remembered for the legacy they portrayed thoughout the game.  In honor of International Women’s Day, I thought it would be a great idea to take a look back at some of the top female characters throughout video game history.  So without further ado and in no particular order, here we go:

Samus Aran

Samus Aran (Metroid)

One of the biggest video game surprises of all-time was the surprise gamers received upon finishing the first Metroid game on the NES.  The main character was a female.  Samus Aran wasn’t revealed to be a woman until the end of the journey after destroying Mother Brain and escaping the planet before it explodes.  At the very end, we are treated to a huge surprise as we discovered that Samus was a woman when she removed her helmet.  But in the end, this didn’t change the way we thought of Metroid and if anything, it made us appreciate Samus and what she stood for even more.

Lara Croft

 Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)

What started originally as a PlayStation classic for her willingness to be adventurous and cunning today, Lara Croft is one of legend.  A cunning warrior who has raided through multiple tombs and survivor skills, there is no doubt that Lara Croft is easily one of the most respected female video game characters today.

Ellie (The Last Of Us)image

Ellie is similar to Lara Croft only a lot younger and a bigger attitude.  Known to others as the cure, and later rescued before the cure could be taken from her, Ellie is known as a survivor throughout The Last Of Us’ story.

A survivor as well, Ellie will always be remembered as a character who was more human than anyone in a world that went completely to hell.

imageClementine (The Walking Dead)

The little girl in the tree house has come a long way since Season One.  Similar to Elle and raised in a hellish world, Clemintine learned how to defind herself at a young age and has proven very resourceful, independant, decisive in times of peril.  And most of all, she’s warm hearted which is something that isn’t easy to be in middle of a zoombie apocalypse.

Zelda (The Legend Of Zelda)image

Born in royalty, Zelda is the princess of the land of Hyrule but has an even higher destiny.  Forever entwined by the Triforce of Wisdom she helped restore the land of Hyrule to it’s peaceful times together with Link.  Zelda is a character that worked in the background as well working with Link disquised as Sheik.  Bottom line, there’s a lot more to Zelda than just being a royal princess.

Yuna (Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy X-2)image

A summoner has one task – a task that is as complicated as being a God from a certain point of view.  Defeating Sin, and creating The Calm throughout the land of Spira.  Yuna, a very young summoner had this task and easily could have abondoned her duty but she knew better.  Guided by her guardians her and Tidus work together to solve the mystery behind Sin, Maester Seymour, and restore peace throughout the land of Spira.

These are just a few examples of women that have exemplified excellence throughout their lives in the games they are portrayed in.  International Women’s Day is a celebration of what women have done in our society and to make it a better place, and there’s no doubt that these women I have mentioned have exemplified just that.  What are some of your favorite female characters in gaming?  Feel free to comment and let us know in the comment section below as we celebrate International Women’s Day.
