The Last Of Us 2 – Naughty Dog’s Next Project?

The Last Of Us 2 – Naughty Dog’s Next Project?

With Uncharted 4 finally completed and moved on to gold press, there’s one title that Naughty Dog needs to move on to if they haven’t already and that title is The Last Of Us 2.

The Last Of Us pulled at every single heart string imaginable and it’s only natural that a sequel is made not only to satisfy the fans, but to further explore the story narrative.

For many people, The Last Of Us was one of the most captivating games ever done. It yielded many perfect scores and has one of the highest metacritic scores of all-time. So one would think that its only natural that a sequel is made right? Well, not exactly. Naughty Dog has yet to formally announce a sequel for the game despite pleads from the community, and media alike (including this article). Neil Drunkmann, the creative director and developer over at Naughty Dog was quoted last September from an interview on the Official PlayStation Magazine (GamesRadar+) by stating,

“There’s a part of me that’s really looking forward to going back to those things, but I have no cycles left in my mind even to be thinking about that right now!”

He does however continue saying this,

“We don’t know what we’re doing next and we won’t know until probably a few months after we finish Uncharted 4.”

And there lies in the keywords – “a few months after Uncharted 4.”  With Uncharted 4 now completed, a few months from now would take us to about the May/June time frame which is right around E3. This would be the perfect stage to announce The Last Of Us 2 to the world if they are indeed planning on working on it next.  The story would be wide open as far as where it could lead into, and the interest is definitely there.  What are your thoughts?  Should Naughty Dog’s next project be The Last Of Us 2 or should they move on to another project or possibly a brand new IP? I truly hope they leave The Last of Us be and let it stand alone as a singular entry in that universe. The story was told, it had a fantastic ending, and the game was so damn good that there’s no where to go but down. If they do go forward with this, then they should set it in the same universe but completely disassociate it from Joel and Ellie to let new protagonists tell their story.

It’s VERY likely to be in some stage of production as you read this. They worked on TLOU *during* U3, and these delays conveniently offer more time to brainstorm ideas and keep the production window tighter than 3 goddamn years (like between TLOU and U4). They can play coy all they want, we know the truth 🙂
