Amazon Prime Required To Purchase Some Games

Amazon Prime Required To Purchase Some Games

As reported on IGN.com as well as VideoGamer.com, Amazon is restricting the purchase of some video games to only Amazon Prime members.  Highly profile titles such as Grand Theft Auto V, FIFA 16, and Assassin’s Creed Syndicate can only be purchased on Amazon if you are an Amazon Prime member.  Amazon Prime membership currently costs $99 annually so users would need to purchase an Amazon Prime membership on top of the cost of the game as well.

Customers can still buy the games from third party sellers without a Prime Membership but if you want to purchase the game directly from Amazon, the Prime Membership will indeed need to be in order.

I reached out to a concerned Amazon rep who additionally notified me that he would forward the information on to the appropriate teams.  The chat transcript can be seen after the break:

Me:Hello there, I noticed recently that certain games can only be purchased if the user has an Amazon Prime account. Do you know why this decision was made?

Gunasundari:
Hello, my name is Gunasundari. I’m here to help you today.

Me:
Hello Gunasundari

Gunasundari:
Hi Albert.
From time to time, we make certain items available exclusively to Prime members.
It’s an additional benefit of membership. The vast majority of items on Amazon.com can be purchased without having a Prime membership and we continue to expand the selection and features available to all customers.

Me:
Do you know how long this promotion will be implemented for Amazon Prime members? Is it permanent?

Gunasundari:Unfortunately we’re not able to confirm exact time. However it may differ from from time to time.

Me:The situation doesn’t necessarily concern myself as I am a current Amazon Prime member, however, I know there are a lot of people who enjoy to purchase video games from Amazon and they may be disappointed to see that some games are not able to be purchased if they aren’t a prime member. Furthermore, this would mean that the potential customer would have to purchase an Amazon Prime membership on top of the video game purchase as well.

Gunasundari:I’ll take this as a serious feedback and forward this to the concern team and take appropriate actions to make sure that this will be available to all.

Me:Thank you, Gunasundari. I appreciate your concern. There are definitely a lot of people that are unhappy about it. A popular news outlet has picked up on this as well (IGN), and I can say that a lot of people are pretty unhappy about it.

Gunasundari:You’re welcome. I really appreciate your concern regarding everyone.

Me:No problem I appreciate your honesty! I freelance for a small video game web site and decided to reach out to Amazon (you) to see if I could get any additional details or clarification. This chat was merely meant to gather more information for our readers, and other people who may be interested and/or frustrated by the latest findings.

Gunasundari:Is there anything else I can assist you with today?

Me:I believe that’s all for today, Gunasundari. Thank you for your feedback on this and I appreciate you forwarding your concern onto another team.

Gunasundari:I really appreciate your understanding. My pleasure. Thank you for taking the time to contact Amazon.com. Have a wonderful day and take care!
