E3 2017: A Look Ahead

by on July 1, 2016

E3 has come and gone and we have seen quite a bit of exciting information from the major publishers and companies alike. Looking back at E3 2016 there’s no doubt it was a huge success and it’s never too early to look into the future of the video game industry’s biggest event. So with that said, let’s look into the future, load some coal into the hype train and get it ready for E3 2017!

Consoles

For Xbox, their future was already revealed at E3 2016. We can look forward to seeing the Xbox One S, a slimmed down version of the Xbox One which supports 4K next month. We should have quite a bit of details regarding Project Scorpio during E3 2017. The system is scheduled for release in late 2017 and is deemed as the most powerful video game console ever featuring an eight-core AMD APU with 320 gigabits per second of memory bandwidth, and have 6 teraflops of graphical performance. No games have been announced for it yet, but there’s no doubt that it will be a force to be reckoned with.

PlayStation has Project Neo on the horizon that is rumored to be released at some point this year. Not much is known about it other than it is supposed to have 4K resolution as well in addition to complementing the PlayStation 4. No word on if Sony is working on an additional console to compete with Project Scorpio, but with the PlayStation Neo not showing up at E3 2016, something tells me that Sony has something up their sleeves for the Neo. Could the Neo be going back to the board for a revamp? Time will tell.

Nintendo is scheduled to release the NX in March of 2017 prior to E3 although the public has yet to see what the console actually looks like. Hopefully in a few months we get to see what the system looks like and what it can really do but in the meantime we can probably look forward to a solid game lineup for the Nintendo NX at next year’s E3.

Games

There were plenty of games revealed at E3 this year, but a lot of games that were shown off did not have any release dates on them which tells us that they will probably be shown off at E3 2017. Here’s a rundown of some games that we should be looking forward to:

Days Gone

Sony Bend Studio has been hard at work on this project for quite sometime and it finally had a debut at E3. The game looks somewhat like The Last Of Us as far as a post apocalyptic feel but also gave a sense of Dead Rising with all of the zombies chasing after the protagonist. The game looks great, and we should have more information at E3 2017.

Death Stranding

This game looks odd by the first trailer but what game doesn’t look odd at first from the mastermind himself, Hideo Kojima. Not much is known about the game other than it stars Norman Reedus; actor known from The Walking Dead television series on AMC. The game looks amazing visually, but no details have really been revealed as far as what exactly is going on. It may be sometime before we see this game released to retail, so we expect to see more information on it at E3 2017 as well.

Detroit: Become Human

Quantic Dream has always done a fine job with games that make you think before you make a rational decision at the heat of a moment. Detroit: Become Human looks like it will certainly follow that formula as well, and will have endless possibilities of how your story will play out. This will increase the replay value of the game ten fold and discussing how scenarios played out with your friends will become something of legend when this game drops. E3 2017 should be a nice playground for this game.

Sea Of Thieves

Arrrrrr!!!  This pirate game will have you exploring islands and taking over ships with your friends when it launches sometime in 2017.  The game will feature user content with the ability to generate your own pirate story to tell your scalawags.  It’s slated for Q1 release but not much has been revealed since then so we might have more details for it at E3 2017 especially if it’s delayed.

Scalebound

I love action role playing games but I’m not very fond of dragon/fantasy type games.  However, when I saw the gameplay for Scalebound during the Xbox E3 Media Briefing, I was floored.  This game looks phenomenal.  PlatinumGames has gone all out for this game and it looks superb.  I can’t wait to have more information regarding Scalebound and I’m sure it will probably make another appearance at E3 2017.

God Of War

Kratos is back and he’s older and seems less angry!  This time he is teaching his son the ways of being a man the best he can in the remake of the classic series from Sony’s Santa Monica Studios.  God Of War promises to bring phenomenal gameplay, graphics, and an underlying story that will keep gamers captivated until the very end.  God Of War was the first demo that was teased during Sony’s E3 Press Conference but did not have a release date attached so there’s a good chance that we will see it again next year.

Aside from consoles, we have VR to look forward to and the PlayStation VR pre-orders have been selling very well.  The Oculus Rift and HTC Vive also seem to be doing very strong and there are plenty of games to go along with the elements of virtual reality.  The future looks bright for the future of VR and we should have plenty of VR games at E3 2017 and I can’t wait to see where developers go next with this technology.

And that’s just a sample of the video games, and consoles that we have to look forward to at E3 2017.  There’s no doubt that we’ll have more games that haven’t even been announced yet to go alongside with the ones mentioned above.  It’s nice to let the dust settle for what was E3 2016 but I’m already looking forward to the future of what’s to come in the best industry in the world.  What are some games that you are looking forward to seeing at E3 2017 and beyond?  Leave your thoughts in the comment section below and be sure to check out our mobile app available in the Google Play & iOS App Store!
