- Devilman (Dragon Ball)
This choice is a bit more left-field and is one of the more “surprising” picks for this list. While I don’t think there is going to be too much representation from the original Dragon Ball anime, a DLC character wouldn’t bad. I chose this guy because of his hilarious voice acting from Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and his aerial fighting style. But let’s be honest here, if they pick a Dragon Ball character, it’s probably going to be Kid Goku. Or Arale.
Devilman is human-bat hybrid creature, so his fighting style should be focused mostly on aerial attacks and combos. He’ll have a few ground attacks, but not enough to discourage air-combo focused gameplay. I can see Devilman being an aerial version of Frieza, where most of his attacks are long-range lasers and missiles. He should also have a gap closer, to hone in on enemies from far away. Characters like Devilman should have a higher skill cap, and reward riskier plays. So far, most of the characters have been fairly safe and clear-cut, so it would be nice to have something a little different.
- Legendary Super Saiyan Broly/Bojack (Dragon Ball Z: Broly the Legendary Super Saiyan/Bojack Unbound)
This easily my least favourite entry on the list, and I only put it here for variety. Personally, I don’t really care which one of these guys gets chosen. Regardless, it would be nice to have a slower, power-hitting character in the mix. Broly would probably be the way to go considering he has three movies and is more iconic than Bojack. Since movie characters are generally considered to be non-canon, I can see Broly or Bojack being implemented as DLC characters.
Both characters are very bulky and pack quite the punch. In terms of playstyle, they should control a little slow and be built around close-ranged and grab attacks. Their low speed will be offset by high-damage attacks and priority grabs. I’m not too sure what else makes these kinds of characters work since I rarely use them. But I would love to see Arc System Works add the brawler archetype into Dragon Ball FighterZ.
- Pan (Dragon Ball GT)
This is another strange choice, but I would like to see at least one representative from Dragon Ball GT. Vegeta and Goku are a no go because we have two versions of them already. A case could be made for Omega Shenron or Baby, but I personally do not find them very interesting. Pan could be a nice addition to the roster and would be much better than adding, say, Kid Goku. Being Goku’s granddaughter, and the important role she played in the story means she is relevant enough to be a decent character choice.
Pan would play similar to Gohan, in the sense that she has short reach. Unlike Gohan, Pan’s playstyle would place a greater emphasis on energy attacks and maintaining distance, because she doesn’t have the same raw strength as others. Unfortunately, I don’t think Pan has a move-set that can differentiate her from the other characters. Add to the fact that Dragon Ball GT isn’t as relevant anymore, and we probably won’t be seeing her in Dragon Ball FighterZ anytime soon.
That wraps up the 6 characters I’d like to see in Dragon Ball FighterZ, most of which would probably be better as DLC. This list was harder to make than I initially thought. I found out that Dragon Ball doesn’t have a huge variety of characters that would make for an interesting fighting game roster. There is also a serious lack of any female characters with the most prominent one, Android 18, already being in the game. Or perhaps there are many interesting characters that I don’t know about and forgot to mention?
