Belgium’s gaming commission, a government entity that oversees and licenses games of chance, has announced that they are investigating video games like Overwatch and Star Wars: Battlefront II and deciding whether loot crates should be categorized as gambling.
The commission’s director, Peter Naessens, says if your ability to succeed in the game is dependent on random outcomes, then the commission will have to consider it a game of chance. “Therein lies the problem. It depends on luck and at that point you’re gambling,” says Naessens, “If there is a game of chance, it is not possible without a permit from the Gaming Commission.”
In a worst case scenario for EA and Blizzard, this could lead to fines of hundreds and thousands of Euros. This could also require the respective games to be pulled from shelves.
