Game of Thrones Creators To Write And Produce New Star Wars Films

In a surprise announcement today, Star Wars’ main website has announced that Game of Thrones writers, David Benioff and D.B Weiss have been brought onboard at Lucasfilm to write and produce a new series of Star Wars films.

These films are not to be confused with the ones that were recently announced with Rian Johnson; writer and director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, his trilogy, nor does it have any bearing on the current Skywalker saga of films.

“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said president of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

The Star Wars franchise has been on a big upswing within the last several months. Star Wars: The Last Jedi released in December to critical acclaim. Most recently, the first teaser trailer for the much anticipated Solo: A Star Wars Story aired yesterday in its entirety. With Episode IX still on the horizon, as well as the Star Wars Rebels series finale, things are looking up for Lucasfilm.

“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” said Benioff and Weiss. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

As with the Rian Johnson trilogy, fans are left to speculate what a series of new films could entail, especially considering the fact that Benioff and Weiss have scored Emmy awards for their work on Game of Thrones.

Once again, I must throw my hat in the ring for a series of films taking place during the time of the Old Republic. Thus far, in canon, there’s very little we know. Prior to The Phantom Menace we understand that the Sith were supposedly extinct for a millennia. Then again, more anthology films set within the current saga could be illuminating, such as a Darth Vader, Boba Fett, or an Obi-Wan Kenobi solo film. Wishful thinking I suppose.
