E3 2018: PlayStation Press Conference Recap

Sony held their E3 2018 PlayStation Experience today. If you missed out on watching the event live, fear not, we have our E3 2018 PlayStation recap of the proceedings held when Sony took the stage. Read on below for more information.

PRE-SHOW

The Last of Us: Part II

The PlayStation pre-show opened with a beautiful musical overture on banjo by Gustavo Santaolalla. What else comes to mind than The Last of Us: Part II? We gain a far closer look into Ellie’s role in the game. The sequel looks to not let up in terms of raw emotion and absolute dread. What the plot entails remains to be seen, but fans can expect bite-your-nails, pulse pounding entertainment.

God of War

Sony alludes that they are hearing fans on social media in regards to a New Game Plus mode for God of War. Sony confirms that the additional mode is indeed in the works. No release date yet but expect it to happen.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

No surprise here. Future DLC will be released on PlayStation 4 first. Black Ops 1, 2, and 3 will have maps headed to Black Ops 4. In a surprise announcement, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will be heading to PlayStation Plus subscribers tonight as a free game during the month of June.

Destiny 2: Forsaken

Forthcoming DLC for Destiny 2 will be headed to PlayStation 4 on September 4.

SHOWCASE

Ghost of Tsushima

The new gameplay trailer showcased a Mongolian invasion in which the main character engages in sword combat with several soldiers. It employs a parry system not unlike the Batman Arkham games. Developed by Sucker Punch, getting used to gameplay should come easily to those who’ve played Infamous: Second Son. Fans of blood and gore are sure to be pleased with the fact you can dismember and dispatch foes with fashion. A slow-motion camera during stealth sequences lets you clear a room with deadly precision. The demo showed no signs of a HUD, which makes for a very immersive experience. Ghost of Tsushima also seems to deliver in terms of emotional storytelling as the trailer ends in a standoff with a one time friend. Despite the first gameplay reveal, Ghost of Tsushima does not yet have a release date.

Control

Sony showed off what Remedy has been working on with Control. The game’s trailer was very intriguing to say the least. The game’s female protagonist makes use of a curious shifting gun. The trailer makes one think of Inception, in which the environment also is capable of shifting and changing its properties. The female protagonist also seems to use telekinetic abilities as she causes objects in the environment to home-in on her surrounding enemies. No release date has been revealed, but Control will be published by 505 Games.

Resident Evil 2 Remake

The reveal trailer for the Resident Evil 2 Remake was dark, gritty, and harkens back to the survival-horror roots. Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield are back. The remake will launch sooner than you think on January 25, 2019.

Trover Saves The Universe

From the makers of Rick and Morty comes a new action platformer and optional PlayStation VR experience exclusive to PS4. The tongue-in-cheek and awkward humor of the show is evident in this new title. Justin Roiland also provides voice work for the characters. Makes you think if this will break the fourth wall as seen in the trailer or if it’s going to be a platformer only. My money’s on the former.

Kingdom Hearts III

A new trailer for KH3 shows Sora, Donald, and Goofy in the world of Pirates of the Caribbean. Captain Jack Sparrow looks to be support for Sora and the world of Pirates looks absolutely gorgeous. Jack sounds a lot like Johnny Depp, perhaps it is him. Kingdom Hearts III launches January 29, 2018.

Surprise announcement is that all previously released KH compilations such as Kingdom Hearts 1.5, 2.5, and 2.8 will be in one package, and will also include Kingdom Hearts III, exclusive to PS4.

Death Stranding

A new trailer starring Norman Reedus was shown off. A Kojima tradition, a new song was played over footage of the game. He has a name, Sam Port Bridges. He is joined by a new character we’ve never seen. They are haunted by an unseen terror. It’s anyone’s guess what’s going on, but Kojima Productions has something great in their hands. No release date yet.

Nioh 2

The sequel was announced via a reveal trailer.

Marvel’s Spider-Man

A new trailer was shown in which Electro appears and springs some prisoners free. Spidey proceeds to take down the escaped thugs when Rhino appears. And then Scorpion pulls one over Spidey! The game plays up the inclusion of the Sinister Six when Vulture and Negative Man appear. By the trailer’s end the identity of the final member of the Sinister Six is kept shrouded in mystery. Marvel’s Spider-Man will launch exclusively to PS4 on September 7, 2018.

Deracine

FromSoftware’s PSVR title made its debut. Not much was shared, such as the game’s release date, other than the reveal trailer. Deracine closes out the E3 2018 PlayStation Experience.

Jason Arriola

One of the biggest Star Wars fans there is. When I don't have one of many gaming peripherals in my hands I probably have my nose in a good book, out amiibo hunting, or contemplating (and never deciding) what game to pull off my shelf next!
