New ‘Venom’ Trailer Gives Venom the Spotlight

Sony has dropped the third official Venom trailer for the upcoming movie, starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, who is Venom’s most iconic host. The movie is directed by Ruben Fleischer (who is mostly known for his work directing Zombieland) and will be released October 5th, 2018.

Venom is given much focus in this trailer than in the previous two. He is shown scaling walls, protecting Eddie, and threatening people with the possibility of their limbs and organs being consumed. While making changes are common practice in any movie adaptation, it should be worth noting that when Eddie was Venom’s host, the symbiote never consumed human flesh. Eddie’s Venom was in fact implied to feed off of negative emotions, which is why the two made such a powerful team. It wasn’t until Mac Gargan became his host did the two partake in cannibalism due to Mac’s inability to control both their bloodlust.

The partnership between the symbiote and Eddie is expounded upon a little more in the Venom trailer, with the two arguing with each other and attempting to find middle ground as they struggle to survive. A short scene features Eddie admitting that hosting Venom is “not completely awful,” so hopefully the film will attempt to capture the symbiotic relationship between humans and, well, symbiotes. There are plenty of glimpses of the action to be found in Venom as the two face off against soldiers and another, more villainous symbiote.

Another reveal from this latest Venom trailer is the whole new slew of symbiotes revealed, including Scream and Riot. Riot is an interesting symbiote to include in Venom, as his comic-book counterpart is technically one of Venom’s children. He and his siblings were forcibly spawned from Venom’s body due to the experiments of Dr. Carlton Drake. It appears that Riot will be the film’s primary antagonist, as Fleischer teased the idea of him and other villains appearing when interviewed at Comic-Con.
