Team Sonic Racing, the latest racing collaboration between Sega and Sumo Digital, won’t launch later this year as originally planned. Instead, the title has been pushed back until May 21, 2019.
Team Sonic Racing was set to launch this December, but a statement released by Sega says the delay will enable the team to “deliver the highest quality experience to fans” and “hone the title to enhance the player experience to ensure Team Sonic Racing delivers the best gameplay experience possible.”
“During this additional time, Sega and Sumo Digital will continue to hone the title to enhance the player experience to ensure Team Sonic Racing delivers the best gameplay experience possible,” the publisher said. “We understand that many fans were looking forward to a Winter release and apologize for any inconvenience caused.”
Team Sonic Racing lets players select from multiple characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog universe and compete in team-based kart races. Each character fits into one of three classes (speed, power, or technique) and provides bonuses to the characters they are aligned with. Using the three-character teams, players can gift items, request items, and even draft to slingshot around teammates.
Coming from the team behind Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing and Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed, this new racing game has a lot to live up to. More time being spent on the project can always help bringing the final product to its best state possible. Maybe this extra time can be used to add even more content to the game. We’ll have to wait and see what Sega has in store for us next year.
Team Sonic Racing is now set to release on May 21, 2019, for PlayStation 4, Switch, Xbox One, and PC.
