Mortal Kombat has been a celebrated franchise dating back to its early arcade days when it debuted in 1992. Known for its excessive violence and unforgettable fatalities, its gameplay is renowned by generations of gamers from all over the world. Paired with a legendary cast of characters, including: Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Raiden, Liu Kang, and more, Mortal Kombat has solidified its spot as one of the best fighting game franchises of all time. Ed Boon, one of the original creators of the Mortal Kombat franchise, surprised the world at The Game Awards last month when he dropped a teaser trailer for the upcoming game, Mortal Kombat 11.
The trailer depicts a brutal battle between Scorpion and Dark Raiden, blended perfectly with the song Immortal, a hip-hop track by rapper, 21 Savage. Immediately following the trailer, Boon teased there would be more reveals to come early in the new year.
Earlier this week, Boon tweeted out that the Mortal Kombat 11 reveal would take place on January 17 in Los Angeles and feature: story and character details, new features, the first hands-on experience, and more!
That brings us to today, the reveal of Mortal Kombat 11 just concluded, and there were many surprises. They opened the show with a gory gameplay reveal trailer. We also got to see seven playable characters, including: Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Baraka, and Dark Raiden. We also saw the return of the blood-wielding Skarlet, the fan-favorite from Mortal Kombat 9, as well as a new character Geras, who will feature time control abilities during combat. The big surprise is that Sonya Blade will be voiced and played by professional female MMA fighter, Ronda Rousey!
All characters in Mortal Kombat 11 will feature plenty of customization, including a variety of different skins, introductions, and victory animations. You will also be able to customize costume pieces, including masks, blades, and more!
Combat looks as engaging as ever in Mortal Kombat 11, with a few minor changes being made. First, the shared meter for special attacks in previous games has been split into two: a horizontal meter for offensive attacks, and vertical meter for defensive attacks. Once a character falls below 30% health, an indicator for a “Fatal Blow” becomes available, launching you into a short cutscene and inflicting a devastating amount of damage on your foe. There is also the new addition of “Flawless Blocks.” But, what would a Mortal Kombat game be without fatalities? Oh, there will be plenty fatalities, don’t you worry.
The entire Prologue Story trailer was revealed, featuring a conversation between Dark Raiden and Shinnok in events that take place after Mortal Kombat 9. After some gory events transpire, Kronika, The Keeper of Time shows up and briefly speaks with the decapitated head of Shinnok before the trailer fades to black. Ed Boon revealed that the story will explore time travel, with characters returning to meet younger versions of themselves.
Pre-orders for Mortal Kombat 11 are available now, featuring access to the beta which begins March 28th and the playable character Shao Kahn. Lastly, there will be a special Kollector’s Edition available, featuring a full-sized Scorpion mask.
