Late last week, Sony’s Social Media Manager Justin Massongill posted an article on the Official PlayStation Blog detailing the top downloads of 2018 for the PlayStation Store. The categories included: Top PS4 Games, Top PSVR Games, Top Free-to-Play Games and more.
The top PlayStation Store titles downloaded for PS4 in 2018 were as follows:
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
- Red Dead Redemption II
- Marvel’s Spider-Man
- God of War
- Grand Theft Auto V
- NBA 2K19
- FIFA 19
- Monster Hunter: World
- Far Cry 5
- Madden NFL 19
It’s no surprise to see Activision’s Call of Duty top the PlayStation Store charts once again, but it is worth noting that this is the first entry to forego a campaign mode completely. Most of Call of Duty’s success can be attributed to its multiplayer modes, and this year is no different with the addition of a popular Battle Royale mode. It will be interesting to see if future iterations in the series are without a proper campaign mode since it did not seem to negatively affect sales.
Another standout title on the list is Marvel’s Spider-Man, which is easily one of the most talked about and shared games of 2018. Sony revealed some sales figures recently during its press conference at CES, highlighting that Spider-Man has topped 9 million units sold from September 9th to November 25th across both the PlayStation Store and retail versions. This makes Spider-Man not only the best-selling PlayStation 4 exclusive but one of the top-selling PlayStation exclusives of all time!
Arguably one of the biggest surprises on the list is Grand Theft Auto V, which continues to move copies year-after-year. It was recently revealed that GTA V has sold over 90 million copies in its lifetime, earning publisher Take-Two interactive more than $6 Billion in the process, which also makes it the most successful media franchise of all-time. It’s hard to believe that game will turn six years old this year and it will likely still be one of the top-selling games of 2019.
There’s a lot to look forward to on the horizon for this year, including: Kingdom Hearts III, Resident Evil 2, Anthem, The Division II, Far Cry: New Dawn and more (and that’s just in the first few months)! It’s going to be another busy year for gamers, and it will be interesting to see which games end up in the top 10 after the dust settles.
