The wait is over and we finally get to see what has been teased mercilessly to us fans. This episode focuses on the origins of one Hunter Zolomon or as we know him as Zoom. Many years ago on Earth Two little Hunter witnessed the abuse and then murder of his mother by his own father. He is then sent to an orphanage that has been reading way too many Charles Dickens novels. So I was wrong about the timeline it seems this episode is the start of his jump to SuperGirl’s world and then picks up after Barry returns. No one at STAR seemed to notice that he jumped to another universe.
Barry brings up opening a breech to get to Earth-2 but Harry shuts him down fearing that Zoom will come back and kill his daughter Jesse. Harry seriously needs to cut the apron strings, Jesse is gone and doesn’t want to be found. While the rest of the team is on board Harry rage quits telling the team they are on their own.
Back at Joe’s Wally lets Joe know that he isn’t living on campus because he cannot afford it. Joe offers to pay for Wally’s room and board and throws in a mini fridge which Wally declines. Wally doesn’t seem the type to accept handouts. Joe asks Barry about Wally’s doppelganger which fires up a lightbulb above Barry’s head (seriously they should put that in at least once.)
Back at STAR labs Caitlin and Cisco come up with the worse idea ever to open the breaches: Setting off a nuke next to the city’s power grid. Barry however has another idea they go to Harry and ask him about Reverb Cisco’s evil doppelganger. Barry figures that Cisco can cause enough vibrations to open a rift to Earth-2. Cisco tries but has no luck. Harry drops in on Joe who is having some father-son bonding time with Wally. Joe was looking for Jesse but she is nowhere to be found. Joe talks sense into Harry to stop being afraid and help Barry because he maybe the only chance Barry has to defeating Zoom.
Cisco and Barry head over to a children’s hospital where there’s a weak point between worlds. Harry shows up with Cisco’s new Vibe goggles. Cisco opens a rift…right into Zoom’s evil lair, the orphanage we saw little Hunter getting sent. However Cisco stops opening the rift afraid of what might happen to him if he does such a thing. Harry reconfigures the device he used to steal Barry’s speed to give Barry more speed. Joe can’t figure Wally out, Barry tells him what Wally really wants: to move in with Joe. Both seem excited about the prospect. Caitlin and Iris watch Iris reveals that she bailed out on her date with her boss. Iris can’t get over that it seems fate wants her to be with Barry and she seems open to the idea.
Wally heads over to Joe’s where Joe has cleared out a room and offers Wally a place to stay if he wants it. Wally excitedly agrees and finally calls Joe Dad. The heart to hearts continue as Barry talks to Cisco about his fear. Cisco is afraid of turning to the darkside by opening breaches. Barry tells Cisco that no matter what happens Barry will always be there with him each step of the way to look out for him. Convinced Cisco is ready for round 2. Caitlin let’s slip that Jay’s doppelganger is Hunter Zolomon on this Earth. Harry knows the name because Hunter Zolomon of Earth-2 is a serial killer. After killing twenty-three people he was sent to an insane asylum. The particle accelerator explosion happened while Hunter was getting old school electroshock therapy thus birthing him into the monster we call Zoom. With this knowledge in hand Barry now has an idea of how to stop Hunter. Cisco opens the rift and Zoom hops out. Barry challenges Zoom as they race through Central City luring him back to STAR labs and right into a trap. Using the area where they trained they use pictures of Zoom’s mother and father to distract him allowing Barry to put the boot on him. We now see the real Hunter a remorseless killer and then goes all creepy telling Barry ‘You can’t lock up the darkness’ before escaping the boot and racing off.
Zoom kidnaps Wally and offers a trade Wally for Barry’s speed. Wally wakes up back in Zoom’s lair with the masked man. Joe is scared (are we noticing a fear theme here?) while everyone tries to come up with a plan to get Wally back. Barry bites the bullet because Wally is family and has Cisco tell Zoom that they have a deal. At this point I can’t help but wonder how in the heck is Zoom able to get back to Earth-2? Did he use the same breach Cisco opened?
We finally get an explanation on how Jay was killed: time travel! Zoom went back in time and talked to his old self, convincing him to die for the cause. As Caitlin calls him a monster Hunter has the flashback to the exact same words Hunter’s mother said to his father. Zoom gets Barry’s speed and he takes Caitlin as a consolation prize.
So what now? Barry is human no more speed force, Zoom is on the loose on Earth-1. Will Barry take the velocity nine to save his friend and both Earths? Tune in next week.
