Stop me if you’ve heard all this before, a show about super powered school girls fighting monsters and bad guys, their school is teaching them how to fight, the and they have weapons that can turn into a sword or a gun. Oh and I also forgot to mention it’s NOT an anime it’s a show called RWBY!
Rooster Teeth’s smash hit called RWBY (pronounced Ruby) premiered in July 2013 and was created by the late Monty Oum. Many may remember Monty’s other works such as Dead Fantasy and Haloid. He joined Rooster Teeth 2010 and brought their already famous series Red Vs Blue to a whole new level of action. When Monty completed work on RVB season 10 he began working on RWBY which he called it Red, Red, White, Black and Yellow. The series was officially announced that year at PAX East and gained a following through the teaser trailers released by Rooster Teeth as well as design concepts by Monty himself.
RWBY is set in a world called Remnant where humans live with an animal/human race known as the Faunus; to protect their cities and homes they must battle dark creatures known as the Grim with weapons using an element called dust that allows the wielder to channel the forces of nature. Those that do battle with The Grim are called Hunters or Huntresses. The series focuses on a girl called Ruby Rose, the daughter of two hunters who wants to become a huntress. She along with her half-sister Yang are accepted into Beacon Academy where they train to become Huntresses. In this world students are placed into teams. Ruby, along with Yang, Weiss Schnee and Blake Belladonna form the team RWBY (Ruby) The series focuses on their personal struggles as well as their struggles to become huntresses. Along with the man cast other characters have their own plots we also get to meet Jean Arc and his teammates that form team JNPR (Juniper) along with many others.
The show just completed its third season and gained some popular voice talents for a few of its characters: Elizabeth Maxwell (Ghost in the Shell’s Major Kusanagi) plays Winter Schnee and Vic Mignogna (Full Metal Alchemist’s Edward Elric) plays Qrow Branwen. Jessica Nigri also joined the cast as the villain Cinder Fall and Monty Oum’s brother Neath Oum took over as the voice of Ren after Monty unexpectedly passed away in 2015.
Focus on Cosplay
It’s not just the show alone that makes this an amazing experience. It’s the time and dedication to the fans of the show with little touches like the characters mention fan made relationship names, Easter eggs from Rooster Teeth’s other productions and Monty’s amazing focus on detail and realistic design to all the costumes the characters wear and their weapons. He would often post full character costume designs in detail so cosplayers could get the patterns correct and he would show a blue prints for all the popular weapons so they could be constructed with ease. With all this and the show’s popularity conventions are now full of people cosplaying as the characters from the show.
Export to Japan
Before his passing Monty and Rooster teeth signed a deal with Warner Brothers Japan to have the show brought to Japanese networks with Japanese voice actors. As expected the show became a huge hit Japan and became widely cosplayed as well.
RWBY After Monty
Monty Oum passed away on Feb 1 2015 after falling into a coma during a medical procedure. His death rocked not only Rooster Teeth but it’s whole community and fan base. Many fans feared that this would be the end of RWBY but members of Rooster Teeth assured everyone that RWBY would continue. The show was placed into the hands of Miles Luna and Gray Haddock who worked closely with Monty and knew the story of RWBY. Even after his passing Monty continues to drive the members of Rooster Teeth to push the limits because nothing is impossible and as his personal motto to goes ‘keep moving forward.’
RWBY: Grim Eclipse
What started off as a fan made game soon was picked up by Rooster Teeth. They announced the development of the game at last year’s RTX. Rooster Teeth sponsors were allowed to play a beta version of the game and it was released on Steam Greenlight in Dec 2015.
The game allows players to take control of one of the girls of team RWBY as they hack and shoot their way through attacking Grim. It has full controller support and a four player online co-op. Reviews for this have been very positive on Steam and perhaps there will be a full release sometime in the near future.
