“At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last we will have revenge”
As Star Wars day passes, the Revenge of the Fifth is upon us. Many great Sith have made appearances in books, movies, and video games. Some from the expanded universe have been forgotten, now called Star Wars Legends, some have been cut in half and brought back from the dead. But they all have one thing in common, a mastery of the Dark Side.
Darth Bane (Star Wars Legends/Partially Canonized):
Darth Bane is one of the greatest Sith. He hails from the Expanded Universe, however he has been officially mentioned in the Star Wars: Clone Wars TV show, making at least his name, officially cannon. Darth Bane live 1000 years before episode one and his story is complex, it begins as a poor miner, then solider, from there, to a master of the Dark Side.
Bane is responsible for re-instating the Rule of Two, One Master, and One Apprentice. One to harness the power of the Dark Side, and One to crave it. Bane single-handedly destroyed the Sith Order, which had turned into a dark version of the Jedi, with temple structures, a council, and re-instated the Rule of Two. Bane eventually becomes infested with a type of beetle which makes him impervious to harm, while at the same time they drained his blood; fueling his Force abilities and making him a formidable foe.
Later it is his death that is referenced in Episode 1, when they are speaking about the Sith being gone for a millennium. His story is fantastic and the books are great. I encourage all to read them.
Darth Revan (Star Wars Legends)
Revan—renowned as the Revanchist, honored as the Revan, reviled as Revan the Butcher, dreaded as the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Revan, and praised as the Prodigal Knight. –
Revan started life as a Jedi Knight in the expanded universe. However his path strayed when he went against the wishes of the Jedi council, donning the mask of a fallen warrior and taking the name Revan. He joined in a war between the Republic, and a group called the Mandalorians, the most feared warriors in the galaxy. As he left the Order, he was appointed Supreme Commander of the Republic forces in the Mandalorian Wars. After winning the war, Revan and his friend Alek, now known as Malak then followed the trail of Sith influence to a place beyond the Outer Rim. Where they found the Sith, and were turned to the Dark Side.
A short while after this are the events of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. This happens to be one of my favorite games of all time. There is more to his story, I recommend playing the game and from there pick up the book Revan for about half price, for it is a good story, but only focuses on the last few months of his life.
Darth Nihilus (Star Wars Legends)
The legacy of Darth Nihilus is intertwined with Darth Revan. After the destruction of a super weapon, Nihilus as a child, was one of only a few hundred survivors of the fleets of the Republic and the Mandalorians that were trapped inside of a gravitational anomaly called a Mass Shadow. To survive, Nihilus accidentally (at first) started to drain the life of the other survivors. This anomaly changed him, making him a hole in the force, causing him to crave force energy.
This hunger continued to worsen over the following years, so much so that it began to consume his body. Knowing death was near, he encased his spirit in a suit of armor, giving him a form, and a way to use a light saber, while his body was consumed. To satisfy his hunger he began to hunt down the Jedi and attempt to feed his hunger, and purge them from the galaxy. He almost succeeded in his destruction of the Jedi order, when he fell into a trap set by the Jedi and the Madalorians, which resulted in his “death.” His followers took his armor, containing his spirit, which could be accessed with the use of his Holocron, back to Korriban where it was buried.
Darth Plagueis (Star Wars Episode III)
Darth Plagueis is one of the six Sith Lords who currently reside in the official Star Wars timeline. Plagueis was the master of Sidious and the debated architect behind Anakin Skywalker.
While Plagueis was not a great swordsman or force wielder, he commanded power over a beings Midi-clorians, the factor that makes a being force sensitive. His power was so great that it was believed that he could give life and keep beings from dying. His greatest fear was not of death, but of losing power, which came to fruition when Sidious felt he had learned all he could, and slew him.
I struggled with the last one for this list. While these are in no particular order, I wanted to bring to light Sith that people might not know the story of. I feel that Darth Caedus is a fitting final name for this list.
Caedus started life as Jacen Solo, the eldest son of Han and Leia Solo. Caedus’s story spans over a dozen novels and travels across the galaxy. It starts during a war with the Yuuzhan Vong beings who use living ships, living weapons and exist outside of the Force. At their hands, Jacen is tortured for weeks at a time and came to be a semi-apprentice of a Jedi Knight Vergere, who was also captured. As time progresses Vergere nudges Jacen to the dark side and it is revealed that Vergere was a pawn of the new Sith Order.
Believing as his grandfather before him, that he was chosen to save the galaxy, he begins maneuvering himself to power inside of the Galactic Alliance. Eventually gaining control, torturing his former apprentice, the son of Luke Skywalker, Ben Skywalker, and slaying his aunt, the wife of Luke Skywalker former Sith assassin, Mara Jade.
If any of that sounded familiar, it is because you saw portions of it in the Force Awakens from Ben Solo, aka: Kylo Ren. Now this story goes on from there, from having assassins sent after him, to dueling Luke Skywalker, his story is a long one.
