I think it’s safe to say that the writers for the Marvel Captain America comics have really screwed the pooch. To be honest, this publisher has done some rather insane things with their characters. One of their more memorable moments was The Avengers #200 story line where Ms Marvel was kidnapped by Immortus who then used his mind machine to make her fall in love with him. They have a kid, a son who then does the SAME THING to Ms Marvel in order to be born on Earth’s dimension. This whole borderline Oedipus play ends with Ms Marvel willingly falling IN LOVE with her own son!
I am going to give you a moment to let all that sink in.
We good? Okay I’m going to continue now.
As the comics have evolved and moved to the big screen there’s been a sort of unwritten rules with certain characters. For example Batman cannot ever carry or fire a gun to kill someone, Superman cannot willingly kill someone unless there’s a massive reason to, Deadpool cannot stop being funny, etc.
While in the Marvel universe there is some wiggle room to shake things up, like the new Thor being a girl and Spider Man no longer being Peter Parker. What Marvel has done recently is honestly something one would do when they have run out of ideas or just want to watch the whole damn world burn. In the latest Captain America comic it is revealed that Steve Rogers has been a Hydra Agent this entire time in fact he was raised by Hydra. Yes folks Marvel has made Captain America, the man who has delivered some of the most moving speeches to heroes like Spider Man to insane fanatic villains like Nuke that made them realize something about themselves, a Nazi.
For some of us this is on par with seeing the Dalai Lama grab an AK-47 then wipe out an entire village. It isn’t right, it goes against an unwritten but rule about the character. We the fans have every single reason to be angered. This isn’t like learning that Santa isn’t real. It’s destroying a symbol all for the sake of profit and shock and awe. Captain America is a symbol of hope and someone like Superman that is and has been unchanging at their core. The one hero who always stood firm in what they believed what was right and would lay down their lives to save others.
All I can say is I hope Marvel is happy with their choice and I wish they would rethink their plans in comics rather than destroying a symbol children today idolizing and the inner child of their fans that they just crushed.
