Back in the early 2000s hackers were often characterized by some young kid sitting in his room in front of giant CRT monitor covered in lines of Linux code with the power to shut down power grids. As time when on the and world changed. Now with social media, access to the internet available to everyone, even smartphones, connecting everyone everywhere, and there lies the problem. People began sharing personal, and even private, details about their lives. Heck, even the sites they visit remain traceable; all of this can and will be hacked. We gained a new anti-hero in the form of a group called Anonymous; a group of hackers vilified by the media and praised by the informed people. They are the basis for USA’s hit show Mr Robot.
In the past, TV shows about hackers have been horrible. Writers, instead of doing research, created made up names for computer code and hardware used in PCs. All that cool code the hackers were using was often just good, old Linux. The hackers were often some cool, edgy, rebel-without-a-clue mixed with some suave James Bond style manners and style.
When I was made to watch the first episode of Mr. Robot I had my doubts. USA has had some good shows in the past but often do something in the writing that makes the show horrid to watch. So I watched the first episode, it was accurate, the main character Elliot isn’t some hipster-like, outgoing, fancy dressing, sex machine. He is broken, an addict, has mental issues, and is socially stunted. He is perfect. Elliot also narrates the show giving us a look at what goes on inside his head. Elliot is a hacker but instead of being malicious, he brings forth the truth. At the start of episode one, he brings down a restaurant owner who runs a child porn site; he tells the owner this just before the police raid the restaurant and arrest the owner. He sees a therapist and because he cares about her, hacks the profile of a man she’s dating only to find out he’s not what he says he is. Elliot works for a Cyber Security Company and they have a client, a corporation, that is a financial institution among other things…it’s called Evil Corp. When one of the company’s servers is hacked, Elliot finds the code and a message asking him to leave it there. He does, enter Mr. Robot played by Christian Slater. He introduces Elliot to the hacker group F Society. The group has a plan, to free everyone from their debt by wiping any record of it from the financial computer systems everywhere. As Elliot joins them, his life starts to have many dark twists and turns; each time it is completely and totally unexpected. It also goes deep into Elliot’s past and answers the question ‘Who is Mr Robot’?
The finale of season one will leave you shocked, numb, and begging for season 2.
Mr. Robot, season one is available on Amazon Prime and Hulu, Season two will premiere on the USA Network July 13th.
