This weekend saw the 30th Anniversary of Metroid come and go to absolutely no fanfare. Well, none from Nintendo anyway. Fans got to celebrate in style when the excellent Another Metroid 2 Remake fan project released their first finished build of the game. Soon after though, Nintendo tried to pull the plug.

Beginning 10 years ago, another Metroid 2 Remake or AM2R was one of the highest quality fan remakes out there. Taking Metroid 2, originally released on the Game Boy and using ideas from Metroid Zero Mission, Fusion, and even the Prime series, this is the game that Nintendo could only imagine making.

After years of beta releases, the full game was finally available to download on Saturday August 6th. The website, metroid2remake.blogspot.com was joined by popular fan site, metroid-database.com in hosting the file free to users on PC. Easy to download and install, the game even supports the use of an Xbox controller.

The next day the inevitable happened. Nintendo, as many feared, swooped in, issuing a DMCA takedown notice, and effectively stopping the website from hosting the download file. Although, in a strange twist, the notice was issued to the Metroid Database site, not the developers. And in another twist, as of Sunday evening, the file is still available on both sites to download. Be warned, that may not be the case for long.

Metroid is a much beloved classic Nintendo franchise that fans have wanted to see continue for a long time. This month, the series will get an official release in a spinoff game, Metroid Prime: Federation Force, although the pre-released information has left fans feeling disappointed. Hopefully, Nintendo will be bring back the series on their next console, but in the meantime, Another Metroid 2 Remake is the best release that the franchise has seen in years.

Update: 08/07/2016 9pm CST

The entire Metroid-database.com website is down. Not just the page with the download, the main site is giving an Error 521. This is almost certainly caused by Nintendo’s takedown request.

And it’s gone. While others may try and host the download file in the future, all link have been removed from the developers website.
