The Eye has been a group of people working for the good of the world behind the curtain for many years. In the first film, Mark Ruffalo’s character is looking for revenge for his father’s death when he was a child. With his revenge plot completed in the first film, the focus now points towards the Horsemen and the Eye in Now You See Me 2.

At the end of the first movie we were all asking ourselves, “What is next for the Horsemen?” Little was learned about the mysterious Eye group that was referenced throughout the film. In Now You See Me 2 we pick back up with the 3 of the 4 Horsemen who are now impatiently waiting for their next big show.

Sadly in this film, Isla Fisher (Henley Reeves) does not make a second appearance. In her place, Lizzy Caplan plays the role of Lula. An underground street magician excited for a chance to be a Horsemen. Lula’s character is the new blood of the group and has nothing but excitement for what comes next. I was concerned when I did not see Isla Fisher on the cast list. I did enjoy what she brought to the table in the first movie and thought that the movie might be lacking without her. To my surprise, Lizzy Caplan fills in the 4th Horsemen position perfectly. She brings a new personality to the group that I feel brings them together.

The story of Now You See Me 2 is what you would expect from any sequel. The Horsemen are now facing a challenge that none of them will be able to overcome alone. The 4 Horsemen are captured and have been forced into a job that has high stakes, their lives. The mastermind behind their capture is Walter Mabry, played by Daniel Radcliffe. Unknown to the Horsemen, some of their previous actions had a bigger effect than they might have known. Walter lost a great deal of money during the Horsemen’s last schemes and Walter wants them to correct it by stealing a new high-tech computer chip able to hack into any computer system,

The pacing of the movie was well planned, not lingering too long at certain moments. For me, it was interesting to see how these talented magician/criminals were taken down by a mysterious force in a matter of seconds. I enjoyed that the heroes were pushed into a corner and you get to watch how they will get out of their situation. Another key element that helps with the narrative in Now You See Me 2 are the characters and their interactions with each other. If you saw the first Now You See Me, do not worry, the joking quips and good one-liners are still there. By having these entertaining conversations, the audience is never bored and it keeps them engaged. Let us not forget that this movie has magic in it and honestly, who doesn’t enjoy a good magic show?

In Now You See Me 2, they have pushed the envelope in terms of tricks. Some of you might have seen J. Daniel Atlas, played by Jesse Eisenberg, stop rain in mid-air and also disappear into a puddle on the ground in the trailer. Lula’s character magically makes half a dozen doves reappear out of her jacket and Jack Wilder, played by Dave Franco, takes 3 card Monty into a large format. Now You See Me 2 will have you asking how did they do that time and time again. For the larger tricks, the movie does a good recap giving the viewer a peek behind the curtain and shows them how they do the bigger tricks.

If you were a fan of the first Now you See Me movie, I would recommend giving this movie a watch. There is something there for everyone and might even stump some of your brightest friends.
