You might have noticed something has changed on your PlayStation 4 home screen. With the new PlayStation Firmware 4.0 update, Sony has redesigned the XMB bringing a new UI, folder organization, updates to quick menus and so much more. There was a beta test for this system last month, but due to the restricted number of people that could take part, Sony wanted to spread the word about what’s to in store for PlayStation Firmware 4.0.
First, let’s talk about the Quick Menu feature of the PlayStation Firmware 4.0. Similar to Xbox One, PS4 owners will be able to gain access to a variety of different features of the PS4 while in the game. The Quick Menu overlays on top of the game and it is customizable so you can design it to your liking. Along with Quick Menu, the PlayStation Music team and Spotify have been making new playlists based on different video games. Each playlist is designed to match the game you are currently playing, or similar to, giving the user an even wider variety of music to listen to while playing.
Along with this update to help the transition for fans that want to own the PS4 Pro, here are some of the features owners will have available on November 10th for their systems:
- 1080p streaming for Remote Play on PC/Mac and compatible Xperia devices
- 1080p streaming for Share Play
- 1080p 30/60fps live broadcasting on YouTube
- 1080p 30fps live broadcasting on Twitch
Do not fear, for those true fans that still have their day one PS4s will not be left out. In the 4.0 update, the original PS4s will be able to use a new video output High Dynamic Range (HDR). This will allow you to enjoy higher graphic output while playing your games however you will need a display that is HDR compatible.
Another new feature in the 4.0 update for players that like to keep a close eye on their friend’s trophies and activities, the What’s New section has a new design as well. As you can see in the image below, the description of the activity now takes up more of the What’s New area. This will allow you to be able to see what your friends did while you were away.
Similar to the What’s New area, Content Info allows you to see how you are progressing in the game. Here you will be able to find the overall trophy progression of the game, the most recent trophy you earned, as well as the popularity of the game among friends.
From what we can tell from this blog post from PlayStation Blog, this new layout for the PS4 might be just what the fans wanted.
