While most expected a 2017 release for the next entry in the Battlefront series, nothing had yet been officially stated by EA. Rumors had been circulating for a while, and it is now confirmed that Star Wars Battlefront 2 will be releasing next fall. This will put Episode VIII and Battlefront 2 within weeks of each other, bringing some synergy to cross-media release dates in typical Disney fashion.
The sequel to the 2015 semi-hit is rumored to be a bit more expansive than its predecessor. No official gameplay details have been confirmed yet, but we will likely be seeing more map variety, modes, and weapons in Star Wars Battlefront 2. The game is said to be centered around “the new movies”, whereas the first entry in the modern reboot focused on the original trilogy. Whether “new movies” refers to the prequels, the current VII-IX trilogy, or both remains to be seen. We can probably safely assume the focus will be on the setting from VII and VIII though.
Last year’s Battlefront, while loved by quite a few people, was largely met with mediocre response from critics. Many commented on the lack of variety in the game, and lamented the loss of Conquest, the game mode of choice for many solo gamers. Here’s hoping Fall 2017 will bring this series back to its former glory, and give Star Wars fans on console something to cling to for a long time.
