New Marvel Show “Marvel Rising” Announced Ahead of SDCC

A new Marvel show is on the horizon, as more and more superheroes get their own TV shows. Marvel Rising, however, will take a slightly different approach than their typical franchises. This series, featuring tie-in comics, animated shorts, and a movie, will cater specifically to young, female audiences.

Featuring big-name characters such as Spider-Gwen (Ghost-Spider), Ms. Marvel, and Squirrel Girl, this new Marvel show is almost guaranteed to be an instant hit as it explores the challenges of being a young superhero.

Marvel Rising will have its own panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday and feature the main cast of the show, including Dove Cameron (Ghost-Spider), Chloe Bennet (Quake), Milana Vayntrub (Squirrel Girl), Kathreen Khavari (Ms. Marvel), and Kamil McFadden (Patriot). Additional Marvel staff will also be in attendance.

Ahead of SDCC, a new trailer dropped setting the premise of Marvel Rising. Ghost-Spider has been framed for her friend’s murder, and as such is on the run from Ms. Marvel, Squirrel Girl, Quake, and Patriot who are trying to bring her in. As they discover her innocence, new threats emerge that the team must face together.

The cast has already been lauded for being more diverse and inclusive than typical superhero films or shows, with the majority of the main characters being women and minorities. Marvel executives also reportedly spent plenty of time interviewing fans and doing market research to see what types of stories young audiences were looking for, as well as the types of heroes they would like to see. The result is this new Marvel show.

Women and girls have typically been underrepresented in film and comics, so seeing a show that specifically caters to these audiences is a rare treat for geek enthusiasts and casual fans alike. If, for some reason, you’re not excited about this show, remember that it probably wasn’t designed with you in mind.

Marvel Rising will premiere on Disney XD on August 13, with additional shorts to follow. The first tie-in comic, Marvel Rising: Squirrel Girl/Ms. Marvel, is already available.
