It has been reported that there are several rival studios and film producers aiming to work with James Gunn following his recent controversy and firing this July. Gunn was fired from directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after some unsavory tweets from 2008 and 2009 resurfaced.
Reports are coming in via The Hollywood Reporter that reveal at least a dozen other anonymous producers and executives want to work with James Gunn. Their identities will remain hidden until Gunn’s final negotiations with Disney are settled.
Some sources say that these negotiations will not be resolved quickly or cleanly, as Gunn had not breached his contract at the time of his firing. His controversial tweets were posted before he was hired by Marvel Studios, so he could potentially earn up to $10 million in the settlement.
Among many potential studios, Warner Bros. might be vying for Gunn as a director for one of their DC franchises, as their films have rarely accumulated the critical praise that the MCU has garnered over the years.
There are talks of Disney still using James Gunn’s script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which could further complicate the exit negotiations. Whether or not Dave Bautista’s vocal protest regarding the use of Gunn’s script or the unyielding support of the main cast affected this decision is unknown.
No matter what happens with his exit negations with Disney, it appears that James Gunn is in no danger of unemployment once his leave from Marvel has been finalized. Who knows, we could possibly see him direct a film for DC, or another high profile franchise.
