The fans have spoken, and Disney has finally answered. In a recent development, Disney has decided to reinstate James Gunn as the official director for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 despite dropping the director for past controversial tweets.
According to the official report from Deadline, the decision to rehire Gunn was actually made months ago. Apparently, Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn met with Gunn on multiple occasions to discuss his controversial tweets and was eventually persuaded to bring the director back after Gunn’s public apology and his demeanor after the tweets were brought to light.
Gunn was initially fired last summer after tweets joking about rape and pedophilia were made public by Fox News. Deadline writes, “Ultimately, Gunn’s missives were poorly chosen words and not actions, though Disney’s quick trigger was completely understandable when the social media messages were first reported by outlets like Fox News.” James Gunn never defended the tweets themselves, but he did admit to “poor judgment displayed at a time when he was emerging from the Troma film factory and attempting to be a provocateur.”
After the news broke, fans of the franchise and its actors all responded negatively to Disney’s decision to fire the Guardians’ director. However, Gunn’s return to Guardians of the Galaxy isn’t quite that simple. James Gunn recently signed on to write and direct Suicide Squad 2, but it seems as if Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will begin production after Suicide Squad is complete.
