Fans of the stylized Nintendo Switch RPG Octopath Traveler is in for a bit of stellar news. Earlier today, Square Enix announced that there’s not only one game in the works, but two: a console sequel as well as a mobile prequel called Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent.
Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent is a mobile game for iOS and Android, which is set to release in Japan later this year. This “free-to-play single-player RPG” is set in Osterra, the land featured in the original game, but the story takes place a few years before Octopath Traveler. As reported by Gematsu, players can expect another 8-person party system, HD-2D pixelated graphics, a choice between three heroes who are the “‘Chosen One” who will fight against a great evil that has achieved fortune,” and various field commands. As of right now, there is no official release date.
That being said, pre-registration is now open on Octopath Traveler’s official website. Square Enix will also open applications on March 12th, 2019 for an early-access demo of the new mobile game. However, sadly enough, there has been no news on whether or not it will get a Western release as well.
As far as a new Nintendo Switch game goes, there is definitely one in the works. Fans just might have to wait awhile before anything official is released. Octopath Traveler’s official Twitter page addressed their eager fans, “For fans of the Switch version, you also need not worry that the series has moved over to smartphones. The team behind the games explained that production on the next console game will take a while, so they hope the mobile version will help tie people over.”
