After an extended beta period that was announced in October of last year, Sony has finally confirmed via the Official PlayStation Blog that PSN name changes are coming later today to all users. There is also a detailed FAQ answering any questions you may have regarding your PSN name change.

Sony made it very clear that all games published on or after April 1, 2018 have been developed with PSN name change in mind, meaning you should not encounter any issues. They did clarify that not all games have been tested, however, and they have already found an instance where an issue arose. They also published a list of games detailing compatibility issues, including a handful of games experiencing critical issues when a PSN name change was enacted. Some of these games include LittleBigPlanet 3, Everybody’s Golf and MLB The Show 15, amongst others. Some of the issues you could experience include loss of in-game currency–whether purchased or earned–loss of game progress or trophy progress, and more. Be sure to check the lists to ensure you won’t encounter any issues if you choose to change your Online ID.

The PSN name change can be facilitated through your PS4 system directly, or through a browser.

From the Official PlayStation Blog:

“You can either change your online ID on your PS4 or web browser.

PlayStation 4:

  • Step 1: From your PS4 go to [Settings].
  • Step 2: Select [Account Management] > [Account Information] > [Profile] > [Online ID].
  • Step 3: Enter an Online ID of your choice or choose from one of the suggestions.
  • Step 4: Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the change.

Web browser:

  • Step 1: Sign in to your PlayStation Network account and select PSN Profile in the menu.
  • Step 2: Select the Edit button that’s next to your Online ID.
  • Step 3: Enter an Online ID of your choice or choose from one of the suggestions.
  • Step 4: Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the change.”

The first PSN name change will be free for everyone. If you’d like to change your name after that, it will cost you $9.99. There is no limit to the amount of times you can change your Online ID. If you encounter any issues, you’ll be able to revert back to any previous Online ID you’ve used at no additional cost by contacting PlayStation Support.
