HOLY SMOKES.  The wait is finally over.  HBO has officially aired the Game of Thrones premiere for the final season, and it did not disappoint.  The majority of episode one was glorious reunions for characters that have been separated for multiple seasons.  From the reunion of Arya and Jon to Sansa and Tyrion, every minute of episode one was heartwarming.

However, we are not here to recap the first episode.  Instead, the goal here is to breakdown who, after each episode in Season Eight, is getting closer to claiming the Iron Throne.  The ultimate prize in Westeros has and still is the ability to sit the Iron Throne and rule the Seven Kingdoms, but only certain major players even have a shot.  It is no easy task to sit and watch this show without forming some kind of emotional or spiritual bond with certain characters, but alas that is what has been asked, and that is what shall be done.  Three characters will be examined as they gain ground on claiming the Iron Throne, and three characters will be torn apart as they fall further from taking that cold, metallic chair that everyone is clamoring about.

3.) Daenerys Targaryen

We see Daenerys riding into Winterfell with Jon Snow, and it’s quite obvious that the North is not a big fan of the Dragon Queen.  The people of the North do not trust outsiders very easily, but Dany seems to sense it especially after meeting Sansa for the first time.  It’s evident that Dany has the majority of the power at the moment with her two dragons and an army of Unsullied and Dothraki. Unfortunately, Dany is going to need the North in order to rule, and although her new beau, Jon Snow, was King in the North, the Northerners are starting to turn on him after he decided to bend the knee.  Dany has only a few pieces to play in the game for the throne, but she’s experienced enough and has the right advisors to still make her a top three candidate to claim the Iron Throne.

2.) Cersei Lannister

No one is happy with Cersei sitting in prime position to claim the throne.  What people neglect to recognize is that she already has it at the moment. Game of Thrones saw Cersei claim the queenship at the end of season six and she has yet to waiver.  On top of already sitting the throne, Cersei has a fleet of ironborn ships thanks to Euron Greyjoy as well as 20,000 more soldiers from the Golden Company led by Harry Strickland.  Cersei has an army, a fleet, and already sits the throne, so anyone who does not put her in a top three position is fooling themselves.

1.) Jon Snow a.k.a. Aegon Targaryen, 6th of his name, Rightful Heir to the Iron Throne

If the title for our number one pole position for the throne is not a dead giveaway on

where things stand then someone clearly did not watch the episode.  Everyone watched as good ole Samwell Tarly ventured down into the crypts of Winterfell and told Jon his true heritage.  Sam told Jon about how he and Bran had conveniently discovered, with books and Bran’s addiction to Weirwood Trees, that Jon is, in fact, the LEGITIMATE son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen.  Jon’s real name is Aegon Targaryen, 6th of his name, and the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, Ruler of Westeros and the Seven Kingdoms. Anyone who has rooted for Jon since the beginning has been eagerly awaiting this one moment, and the entire world probably fanboyed to the extreme.  Nonetheless, even if everyone was super excited to hear of Jon’s true heritage, the implications for what comes next are far more important than fan service. Jon, Aegon, whatever you want to call him, is the rightful king who happens to be in love with his aunt. How will Dany take the news when Jon tells her? No clue, but it doesn’t matter.  Jon is the one true King of Westeros, and so he claims the number one spot after episode one.

Now that the frontrunners for the throne are determined, let’s take a look at the characters who fell short after the first episode of Season Eight of Game of Thrones:

3.) Tyrion Lannister

We know he loves the game, but it’s unclear if Tyrion even wants the throne because he is clearly not trying very hard if he does.  Just as Sansa said to him after their awkward reunion, “I used to think you were the cleverest man alive.”  Tyrion has seemed to falter here and there after becoming Hand of the Queen for Dany, and this is not a good look.  You’re former wife, and now Lady of Winterfell, is saying you are no longer very clever and you have not made a good decision in a while.  Tyrion is well liked, but this is just a bad look.

2.) The Night King

This one is honestly very simple.  He pinned a young lord to a wall and made him a White Walker.  If that’s not minus 1,000 points, then this entire system is broken.  Side note: we still have not heard him say a word and I, for one, hate it.

1.) Bran Stark a.k.a. The Three-Eyed Raven

It is patently ridiculous to ever think Bran had a shot at the throne.  With that being said, Bovada and other gambling sites across the world had Bran as the FAVORITE.  Did you not see how creepy this kid is sitting in his chair, in the exact same spot, the entire episode?!?  There is a negative one trillion percent chance that Bran claims the Iron Thrones and anyone who says otherwise is wrong.  If you are one of those people who are absolutely incorrect, I think you need to reevaluate your view on Game Of Thrones. That is, until Bran sits the Iron Throne and I’m just dead wrong about all of this. Let us know who you think is the front runner for the Iron Throne, and for more on Game of Thrones, keep it locked to Mammoth Gamers.
