Nintendo just unloaded plenty of new information regarding the upcoming Super Mario Maker 2 heading to Nintendo Switch late next month, and from today’s Direct this definitely appears to be a true sequel to an already great game. Let’s take a look at all that was announced today.
First, Nintendo recapped the basics of course design for those who may have missed the original Super Mario Maker on Wii U and 3DS. Some of the basic elements that were showcased were the ability to place floors, pipes, enemies, and question mark blocks wherever you please. You can add whatever item you’d like to into question blocks, as well as build pipes that lead to underground sub-areas, just like in classic Mario games. Speaking of classic Mario games, you’ll be able to create levels in the original Super Mario Bros. style, as well as Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. styles, as well. If this doesn’t already get your creative juices flowing, then strap in, because we got to see a ton of new items that will be making their debut in Super Mario Maker 2.
One of the most-requested features that were excluded from the original game was the ability to add slopes to levels—and you’ll be able to do just that in Super Mario Maker 2! You can even create gentle slopes, too. In addition, the Angry Sun from Super Mario Bros. 3 is now available, and sure to boost your anxiety levels when dropped into a level. We also got a look at snake blocks, which can follow any path created by the player as well as on/off switches that can be used to toggle certain sections, and create some unique scenarios or traps for the player. They also showcased custom scrolling levels, where the player can designate the trajectory and speed of the scrolling effect, as well as vertical scrolling sub-areas! Plenty of other new dangers were introduced, including Bonzai Bill—a giant Bullet Bill that can optionally turn red to chase Mario around a stage, as well as twisters, icicles, seesaws, and Boom Boom—the mini-boss who debuted in Super Mario Bros. 3. Oh, and they added the fire-breathing Red Yoshi for good measure.
Super Mario Maker 2 is also getting a proper story mode where Mario is tasked with rebuilding Princess Peach’s castle. He must accept missions from the taskmaster’s bulletin board which will have you playing through over 100 courses crafted by Nintendo. As you clear courses, you’ll earn coins which you can use to purchase upgrades and access new areas in the castle. Some areas feature new characters that can offer you different challenges in exchange for more coins. It’s great to see Nintendo-designed courses making their return, as this was one of the best features from the pared-down 3DS version.
What’s a Super Mario Maker game without the community, though? Some of the best ideas come from creative minds around the world, and in Super Mario Maker 2 there are a host of new features that will help you create and discover in new ways! First, you can create courses locally in co-op with a friend for double the brain power—and double the insanity. You can set course conditions for players to achieve such as collecting a certain number of coins, defeating specific enemies, or reaching the goal pole as Super Mario, for instance. Sharing courses will require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, which was to be expected leading up to the game’s release. With the online component, you’ll be able to browse created courses by popular, new, or even by specific level types such as puzzle or auto-scroll. You can also download courses that can be played offline for later. Each creator has a Maker Profile—complete with your own avatar that you can deck out as you earn Maker Points by creating levels. There are also leaderboards for those of you interested in pitting your skills against players around the world.
One of the most exciting new features announced is the ability to play online multiplayer in the Course World section. You have the option of playing with up to four players, either versus or co-op. In versus mode, you’ll be racing each other to the finish. After each match, your versus rating will change based on your performance. In co-op mode, however, you’ll need to work together to reach the goal pole at the end. Only one player must reach the end for the group to be successful, though. For players that each have their own Nintendo Switch with a copy of Super Mario Maker 2, you’ll be able to set up virtual rooms that can be used for local play, with only one player needing a persistent internet connection.
There were a handful of new course themes announced that are coming to Super Mario Maker 2 including desert, snow, forest, and sky-themed levels. There is also a Night Mode that can be unlocked for each theme that not only changes the visuals to reflect nighttime, but also adds some surprises to each level. For instance, Goombas float at night, underground themed levels are upside-down, lights are dimmed in ghost house levels, desert-themed levels have a persistent sandstorm, and much more! Another big feature coming to Super Mario Maker 2 is the Super Mario 3D World theme for levels. This is very different from the other themes, however, as levels created with this theme can’t be changed to older styles as the play style is completely different. Cat Mario returns in this theme, allowing you to climb up walls and other objects—including the goal pole. There are also clear pipes added and crates that float on lava and water, allowing you to create your own path across dangerous areas. Warp boxes can be placed that teleport Mario to secret areas, and there’s even a driveable Koopa Troopa car that can be placed into levels! This theme looks like the most robust yet, and will be an absolute blast to explore!
Super Mario Maker 2 comes out on June 28th, 2019 and is available to pre-purchase now. Nintendo also announced a bundle that comes with 12 months of Nintendo Switch Online for $69.99. If you already have an active subscription, this stacks on top of that. They also announced the Nintendo Game Voucher, available to purchase for $99.99 that you can use on any two eligible games, effectively saving you $20 on two full-priced games. These vouchers are redeemable up to 1-year from purchase and don’t have to be used at the same time.
