It’s been awhile since we last heard from Nintendo regarding upcoming indie games for Nintendo Switch, but they finally returned with Indie World, a roughly 20-minute presentation showcasing some fantastic new games. Over the past couple years, the Nintendo Switch has quickly become the go-to machine for indie game fanatics, and today proves that they aren’t taking their foot of the gas. Let’s take a look at all the games announced today.
Risk of Rain 2
Risk of Rain 2 has been in Early Access on Steam since March of this year, but has already received glowing praise. This game follows 2013’s difficult 2D pixel art roguelike Risk of Rain by bringing the game into a fully 3D environment for the first time. You’ll battle enemies and score loot as you try to escape the planet alone, or with up to three of your friends in cooperative play. Risk of Rain 2 launches on Nintendo Switch this Summer.
Chucklefish, the developer of Wargroove and Starbound as well as the publisher of the wildly popular game Stardew Valley, are publishing an all-new adventure in Eastward. The game sports all-new pixel art that is somehow more beautiful and more detailed than that of Stardew Valley. In Eastward, you’ll be exploring a post-apocalyptic environment, navigating the world with a young girl you just met. There’s exploration, combat, puzzles, and more. Eastward joins the Nintendo Switch indie games lineup in 2020.
Freedom Finger, a game we covered briefly during Kinda Funny’s E3 Showcase earlier this year, is a wild 2D shoot ‘em up where every enemy can become your weapon. The game features over 36 unique levels and an incredible soundtrack from a variety of different artists. Freedom Finger heads to Nintendo Switch later this year.
Röki is a beautiful exploration game featuring snowy environments, mountain ridges, dilapidated temples, and more. The game has gorgeous cel-shaded artwork and a serene soundtrack to accompany you while you explore and make friends with wild creatures. Röki makes its way to Nintendo Switch this Winter.
Torchlight II is an isometric dungeon crawler from Runic Games, a team comprised of employees from the now-defunct Blizzard North, the team responsible for the creation of the Diablo franchise. Torchlight II is in a sense a spiritual successor to the Diablo games, maintaining the look and feel and featuring a similar gameplay loop of hunting, killing, and looting. The game originally launched on PC back in 2012 and is finally making its way to Nintendo Switch on September 3rd. There is also a pre-purchase exclusive item, the pet Yapper, as well as a Nintendo Switch exclusive pet unicorn.
Since EA is seemingly never going to release Skate 4, somebody had to fill the realistic skateboarding genre. Enter Skater XL, an upcoming physics-based skateboarding game that features realistic tricks and offers “total board control.” One of the standout features is that no two tricks are ever the same, something yet to be seen in the genre. Skater XL kickflips onto Nintendo Switch in 2020.
Youropa is a unique 3D puzzle platformer that features a large, blob-like creature that is exploring gravity-based environments that are reminiscent of Super Mario Galaxy. You’ll explore a variety of different environments, each with their own puzzles and aesthetics. You’re also equipped with a spray can that you can use to tag the environment and make it your own. Youropa heads to Nintendo Switch this Winter.
SUPERHOT, the wildly popular time-based puzzler is headed to Nintendo Switch. In this game, time moves only when you move, so you must plan your attacks accordingly. Each room presents you with a certain set of weapons that you must use to meticulously take down oncoming enemies before moving onto the next area. The game features simplistic polygonal art with vibrant colors against a neutral palette. Embrace your inner Keanu Reeves as you dodge bullets like Neo from The Matrix, while pulling off insane kill combos like John Wick. SUPERHOT is available to download today for Nintendo Switch.
Dungeon Defenders: Awakened
Dungeon Defenders: Awakened is a reimagining of the 2010 game, built from the ground-up in Unreal Engine 4 that captures the soul of the original game. The game, currently being Kickstarted, takes place after Dungeon Defenders II and features an overhaul of the gameplay, as well as local co-op for up to four players. Dungeon Defenders: Awakened is a timed-exclusive for Nintendo Switch that will be launching in February 2020.
The Touryst features a beautiful, isometric 3D voxel art style that blends a bit of Minecraft with The Legend of Zelda. In this game, you’ll play arcade games, go scuba diving, solve cryptic puzzles, explore dungeons, go spelunking, traverse the world, and more. There are plenty of unique environments and enemies to encounter in this adventure. The Touryst lands on Nintendo Switch this November.
Skellboy is an action RPG that blends a 2D pixel art style with modern 3D graphics in a very unique way. The game allows you to swap out your skeleton’s body parts as you battle groups of enemies and explore the vast world. Skellboy launches on December 3, 2019.
EarthNight is an upcoming 2D runner/platformer featuring larger-than-life dragons and monsters. You’ll take control of a young child as you platform your way across a variety of unique environments as you try and reclaim the earth from these mighty forces. The game features RPG elements, collectibles, different abilities, and more. EarthNight hits the Nintendo Switch this year.
Hotline Miami Collection
Devolver Digital is bringing a collection of cult classic indie games to Nintendo Switch with the Hotline Miami Collection. These two games feature blazing fast action from a top-down perspective. What makes these games unique is that each level features a number of enemies you must take down all within a single life. If you die, you must restart the level. Thankfully, there are a variety of different weapons you can pickup to make the job easier. The Hotline Miami Collection is available on Nintendo Switch today.

Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition
The Indie World Showcase ended with a surprise announcement: Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition is heading to Nintendo Switch on September 27, 2019. This game, originally released on PC and Xbox, is a beautiful puzzle platformer that you simply can’t miss. The game currently has a sequel in the works, slated to release on February 11, 2020 on Xbox One and PC. Maybe a Nintendo Switch announcement for Ori and the Will of the Wisps is in the near future? One can wish.
