Each year, PAX East is home to tons of previews, first looks, and announcements from some of the biggest names in the business. This year was no exception, with Bandai Namco rolling up to the showfloor in full force. They had demo stations set up with Soul Calibur VI on display in addition to some of their other upcoming games. I decided to try out the latest installment in the Soul Calibur series to see how the game handles and if there’s anything else noteworthy about the game.
Overall, the game handles very similarly to the rest of the series, yet still manages to deviate from the feel of Soul Calibur V. There are some new features, such as Reversal Edge, which is a defensive move, and the game has a fast-paced action feel that is right at home in the fighting game world. It was fun to play, and fans constantly lined up to wait and play the game. That being said, I’m a little disappointed that we haven’t had much news about the game in general; there were only a handful of characters available on the demo, and an even fewer number of maps.
While the Witcher 3 crossover featuring Geralt is definitely a cool addition, there is still no official release date and many fans (including some at Mammoth Gamers!) are itching to hear more about this game. The development team has been quoted that they’ve listened closely to fan feedback this time around, so the game is sure to be a hit once it releases—but in the meantime the suspense is killing many dedicated Soul Calibur players.
Soul Calibur VI will be released on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC in 2018.
