Variety reports that Henry Cavill will play the lead role in the upcoming Netflix series based on “The Witcher”.
Henry Cavill has publicly expressed his interest in the role of Geralt in Netflix’s Witcher adaptation in an interview with IGN. Cavill has also proven himself to be a big fan of both the games and Sapkowski’s novels, telling IGN: “I just replayed [The Witcher 3] through, I love that game, really good game… The books are amazing… I started reading, and they are well worth a read.” When asked if Cavill would be interested in playing the role of Geralt, Cavill stated “Absolutely. That would be an amazing role.”
This will mark Cavill’s first television role since 2010 when he last appeared on Showtime’s historical drama “The Tudors.” The British actor is primarily known for his film roles, having recently starred in the blockbuster action film “Mission: Impossible – Fallout.” He is also known for his role as Superman in the DC Universe, having played the role in the film’s “Man of Steel,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” and “Justice League.”
The series is based on the bestselling fantasy novels by Andrzej Sapkowski. According to Netflix, The Witcher series is described as “an epic tale of fate and family. Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurdles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.”
Executive producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has confirmed the casting of Henry Cavill as Geralt through her Twitter page.
No premiere date for The Witcher series has been announced, but its expected to debut on Netflix sometime in 2020.
